| Ok, so tell me, how many people have to be mauled and/or killed by pit bulls before we outlaw them for domestic possession?The first thing that must be acknowledged is that they are the most common dog used in dog fighting.It is a fact that they have been bred to do just that.There are too many pin heads getting a hold of these dogs for that purpose.Oh I've heard the argument about all the famous people who own or have owned them.I've heard that they're supposedly therapeutic and so on.I've of course heard the argument that it's the owners fault blah, blah blah, blah blah.I don't care.There is no escaping that they maul children, adults and other animals to death.Let me add that these attacks are on the rise and children are those most victimized.In fact, dog attacks are the number one reason kids end up in hospital emergency rooms.Let's face it; the pit bull consistently does the worst damage most often!Though it may be the owners fault (and this is debatable) and certainly is when an owner is training them to fight or attack, the fact is, they kill never-the-less.How is a 4 year old going to know whether or not the dog is dangerous?How does anyone outside the home know whether the owner is a 'good' owner or 'bad'?How many times do we hear how they get loose and attack?Or that they attacked a visitor to the home?And let's talk about the owners.My first instinct is to say, 'morons!' don't you read the news?Haven't you heard how these dogs are fine and then one day just turn on someone?Usually a child by the way.Why do you need a pit bull?This is the real question for the owner. |
| This is the real question for the owner.Among other reasons it's because you want an aggressive dog.Pit bulls kill more people than any other dog.Rottweilers are next (and in my opinion, these need to go as well).Not to mention the brutal maimings that they are the number 1 cause of.Again, most of these are children!Let's not forget the many breeds that these thoughtless people are mixing them with.Now I said it's debatable whether or not the owner is at fault (and they are just for owning them!).Just the other day around where I live, an 8 year old Pit Bull mauls to death a 63 year old lady.The dog belonged to her sister and her husband.The sister tried to get the dog to let go of her skull (much of which was removed) and the pit bull tore off her thumb.She was the lucky one.The husband comes home and swears the dog was never a problem and was a gentle dog to everyone.How many times have I heard that line?There are Pit Bull advocates who will tell you that these dogs are not predisposed to aggression.Not everyone believes this;
Katherine Houpt who is the director of the Animal Behavior Clinic at Cornell and author of Domestic Animal Behavior says: "Different breeds have genetic predispositions to certain kinds of behavior, though that can be influenced by how they are raised.The pit bull is an innately aggressive breed, often owned by someone who wants an aggressive dog, so they're going to encourage it."In the final analysis, who cares?If a dog of another breed (besides Rottweilers) has a sudden meltdown, there is seldom life long damage and even less of a chance of death.If the pit bull looses it though, it's another story.A story that is becoming all too familiar, all too often.This reason alone is enough to outlaw them for domestic habitation. |
