| fear makes the watcher stoneyou do not rule this world alonewe are carved from memoriesof darker gods and enemiesaxis spin you nightfall boundwe watch and wait for dawnas real as sculptors handschisel and hornclaw and fangcrouched aboveobservers mutevigilant, resolutearchaic protectors.This week's gargoyle fixation arrived on Sunday, when during a stroll I glanced up to admire therecently restored clock tower of Toronto's old city hall.For a span of time unforgivable, the quartet of gargoyles slumbered in storage.Extensive restoration to the beautiful sandstone building, designed by the city's greatest early eraarchitect, Edward James Lennox (1854 - 1933), has once again returned the tower to its former glory.The watchers in place, we rush about far below, mostly oblivious to them.- City Hall building, post restorationI love the attention to detail, and the ornamentation that was a hallmark of those years.I also happen to think gargoyles are visually pleasing, but I'm admittedly fond of creepy.For those of you equally bent, enjoy a humble photographic tribute to the gargoyles.- the scholarly one on the right is from the 1972 made for TV movie "Gargoyles"- someone light that for him- is that a double nipple track?such detail ! - and YOU complain about boredom at work?Batmobile, my ass... |
